The instresting story behind this super college

After realising that a big number of students were denied the opportunity to further their studies because of the lack of space at public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges; senior lecturer in Mathematics at Tshwane South TVET College (Pretoria West Campus) the late Mr Eugene van der Walt decided to look for an opportunity to help those that did not receive space. Where after he decided to establish Gauteng Distance College in 1998.

After an overwhelming response throughout the whole country he decided to rename the institution to Technicol SA College.

The name change was important to him to emphasize the availability of education and opportunity to everyone throughout South Africa. This paved the way not only for students that were shown away but also those with working responsibilities to better themselves without having to sacrifice their income. Since the establishment of this family driven company Technicol SA College has become not only the biggest privately owned college but also strives to provide a golden standard of service.

Executive summary

Technicol SA College is a private Further Education and Training (FET) college that aims to offer exceptional quality education and to maintain standards, that are not inferior to standards of comparable public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Although the college currently has resources, capacity, expertise and structures to deliver quality programmes, there is also ample space for improvement and growth.

At Technicol SA College all staff are expected to observe ethical and fair business practises, to widen access to education, labour market needs and to protect the integrity and image of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system and the interests of the public we serve.

Value net analysis

Technicol SA College was established in 1998 with approximately 7 students as a distance learning college for learners who wanted to repeat Grade 12 and N1 to N6 subjects they had failed.

We believe that we provide an essential service to learners who do not have the time, money, resources or ability otherwise to study full-time. During the past five years the college has started to offer classes on a tutorial basis to learners with a variety of subjects.

The main function of the current college staff is the efficient administration of students’ year marks and examination arrangements, but the duties are steadily expanding into more face-to-face contact and assessment of learning.
